Exercise to Lose Fat, Not Weight

Did you just say "huh?" when you read that headline?

Most people equate losing fat and losing weight. My goal is to change that common misperception.

The truth is, you can lose weight and still not lose much fat. Weight loss can come from water loss (at the beginning of a diet, for instance), followed by loss of lean muscle and other vital body tissue, as well asor instead ofloss of fat.

If your body is not what you would like it to be and you want to lose weight, your aim should be to burn fat without losing muscle. And beyond simply preventing muscle loss, you would do well to concentrate on growing more muscle.

There are three basic ways to lose weight:

1. Dieting (with no change in physical activity level).

2. Exercise (with no change in eating habits).

3. Dieting and exercise.

Naturally, No. 3 is the best choice if your goal is to reach your target weight in the quickest amount of time. But even exercising by itself is better than dieting by itself, if your goal is to lose weight through taking off fat.

Dieting without exercise can certainly take off pounds, but it can leave you weaker and make it harder to lose weight or keep it off in the future.

Exercisingdone correctly and consistentlyburns off the right pounds: fat pounds. Exercise can also maintain or increase your muscle strength and size even as you lose weight.

In the context of a weight-loss program, exercising provides these benefits:

1. It burns calories.

2. It increases the bodys metabolic rate so you burn calories faster.

3. It keeps the body from going into starvation mode.

4. It builds muscle mass

5. It helps suppress appetite (in some people).

6. It elevates mood and combats depression, one of the causes of overeating for many people.

7. It reduces chronic tiredness, thereby reducing the temptation to "veg out" in front of the TV with a bowl of ice cream or potato chips.

Suffice it to say that regular exercise is good for your body and your mind.

So, what kind of exercise should you do to lose fat? The answer is: almost any kind that you enjoy enough to keep at it, and that can be incorporated easily into your lifestyle.

Personally, I like to see people take up a regular cardiovascular exercise. This can be as strenuous as a 30-minute workout on a treadmill every day, or as "light" as a daily walk around the neighborhood.

If you choose the latter, dont merely stroll! Walk briskly every step of the way. Take a pedometer or drive your neighborhoods streets in advance and jot down how far it is from one point (such as an intersection) to another. Plan a route that will have you walking at least a mile. Gradually increase the distance as you build up endurance, and if you have the time.

Studies show that you can lose more calories by performing moderate exercise daily than by intensively exercising three times a week. Keep that in mind if your long-term goal includes steady but gradual weight loss.

Besides cardiovascular exercise, I highly recommend working out with weights two or three times a week. If you have access to a gym, great! If not, you can purchase inexpensive dumbbells at places such as WalMart and Target, and these will serve you well until you are able to step up to barbells and weight machines. There are many good books available that illustrate dumbbell workout routines you can do at home.

Weight training will prevent your body from losing muscle as you lose fat. The key is to not overdo it, if weight loss is your goal. You don't want to gain so much muscle that you end up putting on pounds! A good rule of thumb is to do two sets of each exercise in your weight workout routine, not four, five or more as a hard-core bodybuilder might.

The Proper Way Into Weight Management

When it comes to weight management, it does not apply solely to those who are obese; even those whom belong to the range with acceptable BMI (body mass index), have to watch their weight closely, as it affects their health.

Similarly, for exercise, start slow. If you have no idea how to begin, sign up for a program at your local gym as a kick-off to your new exercise plan. Your trainer would draw up an exercise routine that would be suitable for an amateur, so that your body can also adapt to their new exercise routines accordingly.

In conclusion, weight management is not something which can be rushed out. In doing so, it would only result in harm towards ourselves, and might have more severe consequences. The main key towards a successful weight management is that it has to be progressive, so as to give ample time for our body to adapt to the relative changes.

Q: Ive followed most of your nutrition advice as well as purchased a few nutritional information products. Ive managed to drop a good amount of weight but I have hit a wall. I decided that my carbohydrates were too low so a few weeks ago I began cycling them. I was able to drop a few more pounds but nothing great. Do you have any tips for fat loss? - Nancy

A: Your problem can be answered in two simple steps. While I do suspect that you have over dieted, meaning that you dieted for too long that you need to increase your calories. This is a common issue with females but I am going to assume that is not your problem since you seem to have a good idea of correct eating. Here are two suggestions

1) Add in more light active recovery work in. The problem with many dieters is that they simply focus on their weight training and aerobic work, nothing more. While it is true that most people over exercise, not enough people are performing light circuits on their off day or after exercise to further increase their energy usage. It is as simply as going for a walk with a weighted vest on, performing light sled pulling (I typically perform this 1 to 2 times a week at local parks) or adding in light medicine ball circuits. The med ball doesnt have to heavy, 10 or 12 pounds. An effective circuit would look like this.

-Rotation throws

-One arm wall bounces

-Front loaded squats

-Throws for distance

-Side throw downs

Ive had my clients perform this circuit for 2-4 sets of 20 reps and have seen improved results in both fat loss and recovery. Best of all it takes about 5 minutes

2) Correct diet planning. This is another big failure for most people, even those who know that they have to eat every two hours. People just dont plan correctly. If you want to give yourself a chance at success you've got to pre-cook and pre-plan. You say that you have a good of nutritional information so I will take your word on it.

A: I'm going to assume that you have trained hard and are already pretty lean. Here's some suggestions to lose fat

-Focus on your upper back, abs, arms and glutes/hamstring since they are the most noticeable areas in your bathing suit.

-Prioritize deadlifts, under hand rows, single leg deadlifts, steps-ups and bridges to bring up your back and glutes/hamstring.

-Prioritize heavy reverse and hammer curls for your arms and weighted, heavy ab work to make those areas "pop".

These should make you lose fat fast.

When you know your diary is going to hold you accountable for everything you eat, you have a better chance of staying cognizant of your calorie consumption throughout the day.

For most people, overweight or obesity isn't a simple issue of liking food too much - it's a complicated blend of poor habits, difficulty coping with emotions, and years of learning to use food in non-nutritional ways. But once you identify bad habits and learned behaviors using your diary as a self-evaluation tool, the good news is they can be changed. And whatever challenges are presented to you, you know you have the tools at your disposal to produce the healthiest, happiest you.

Losing weight after pregnancy is on many women's mind soon after they give birth to their baby. The overwhelming popularity of the South Beach Diet, Zone Diet, and Atkins Diet has prompted low-carb weight watchers to eat less candy. Overall consumption has actually declined over the last few years; as recently as 1997 the average annual candy consumption was a sky-high 27 pounds.

Besides candy, Halloween threatens many other high-calorie treats like Caramel apples (243 calories), 8-oz. apple cider and a cake donut (319 calories), or a slice of pumpkin pie (240 calories).

Is it possible to cope with the menace of Halloween candy without taking all the fun out of the holiday? Absolutely! If youre looking for fast weight loss, and dont want Halloween to bring your fat loss to a screeching halt, consider these healthy Halloween tips:

1) Walk with your kids while theyre trick-or-treating. A 165-lb. woman strolling along (walking slowly) for one hour will burn approximately 150 calories (source: caloriesperhour.com).

2) Out of sight, out of mind. When the kids have unloaded their stash, store it in an airtight container and put it in the cupboard. A bowl full of candy on the counter is an open invitation to have just one, but a stockpile you cant see is less tempting.

3) If youre going to give out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween, dont buy it until October 31st. Having a candy supply in the house before Halloween only entices you to have some early.

4) If you must buy candy before Halloween, buy a kind you dont like. Again, this will reduce the temptation for you to dig in.

5) Hosting a Halloween party? Supply vegetables, healthy dips, and low fat snacking alternatives instead of candy.

6) Set a Halloween candy deadline by which all Halloween candy must be either consumed (by the kids) or it will be thrown away. Saving that candy for weeks, or even months, only keeps temptation in the house.

7) Put more emphasis on dressing up in a great costume, and less on candy. This is especially true for the kids, who often view Halloween as a candy free-for-all dream come true.

8) By hosting a party on Halloween night, you can control the menu and have fun with friends at the same time.

9) Focus on Halloween activities other than eating. There are lots of options available, from hayrides to haunted houses to bonfires.

10) Candy has a long shelf life, and theres no reason why you couldnt put some of it in airtight bags and store it in the freezer. Allow the kids to take out one bag every two weeks until its gone. This tactic will at least space out the temptation and minimize candy binge eating.

Of course, the absolute best way to avoid weight gain, and perhaps even achieve some easy weight loss, during the Halloween season is to bump up the amount of exercise youre getting. Theres no better way to lose weight fast than a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Make sure the workout youre doing includes both aerobic and resistance training, as it is critical to get both types of exercise to maximize weight loss. Its also important to exercise for at least thirty minutes, three times per week, which is the most recent recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (source: cdc.gov).

A fantastic strategy is to find the best weight loss program for you now, before Halloween hits. The reason is that the last three months of the year are packed with holidays, special dinners and seasonal treats. Losing Weight Your Style

Often times, we're told to do what we aren't totally comfortable with. Especially when it comes to losing weight. Eat like this, exercise like that. Find out how you can do it your style, your way.

Hobbies

You'll have to find a particular physical activity you like as a hobby. The reason for this is simple. If you don't like what you're doing, you're not going to keep it up and you'll most likely fail in your goal to lose weight. If you don't have one, go try out a few activities and find that physical activity you like.

Make sure you perform this activity at least 3 times a week. Try to keep your workout no more than an hour and no less than half an hour.

Drink lots of water

Before every single meal, drink one to two glasses of water. The amount really depends on how much you think overeating, if you think two isn't enough than just drink more. It's pretty hard to drink too much water anyways since your body will simply get rid of excess water.

This in itself will fill your stomach up. Put it this way, if you're overeating, you're definitely getting more than enough food so don't worry that you won't be getting enough nutrients unless all you're eating is junk food, but we'll leave that topic for another day.

End of the day you'll end up eating less. When I talk about a glass of water, I mean plain water, not fruit juice, not a soda drink, just plain water. If you absolutely can't stomach plain water, try adding Stevia to your plain water to give it some sweetness. Stevia is a natural sweetener that will not make you put on weight & you should be able to get it in most pharmacies.

By adding these tips to your lifestyle, you'll start losing weight; however like all things it will take time. Give yourself a month at the very least. You're already losing the weight in your very own style since you're picking out the physical activity that you like and also just adding more water to your diet. Perseverance is the key here. Bodyweight Cardio Weight Loss Circuits

I always have clients that ask me for "Desert Island Workouts", meaning if they were trapped on a deserted island with absolutely no equipment (as they often are in their hotel rooms or when at home), what could they possibly do to burn fat and maintain muscle mass.

The solution is simple. With a little creativity, you can do dozens of bodyweight exercises to burn fat fast. Let's use one of my patented Bodyweight Cardio Circuits as an example.

When putting together a bodyweight circuit, I like to go in this order:

1) A fast, dynamic bodyweight exercise (jumping jacks or running in place)

2) A bodyweight squat (put your hands behind your head to work your upper back)

3) An easy pushup (regular or close grip, kneeling if you are a beginner)

4) A single-leg exercise (such as a walking lunge)

5) An upper back exercise (pullups, chinups, or inverted rows if you are lucky enough to have something to hang on, otherwise you can use resistance band rows or dumbbell rows - unfortunately, if you are truly stuck on a deserted island, you don't have much you can do here)

6) Another single-leg exercise such as split squats

7) A total body ab exercise (mountain climbers are great)

8] Finish with a total body, fast paced exercise (burpees, jump rope, jumping jacks, sprints, running in place, etc)

Do this as 1 giant circuit. No rest between exercises. Rest 1 minute at the end of the circuit and go through this 1-3 more times depending on your fitness level.

BEGINNERS should only go through this once, and at an easy pace AND with REST between exercises. Be CONSERVATIVE anytime you start a new program. If you are advanced, you can start with 2-3 circuits per workout.

Are Your Loved Ones Hindering Your Weight Loss Efforts?

Sometimes our loved ones can hinder our weight loss goals. Often times their intention is not to hinder us.

For example, I love donuts. There was a time in my life when I simply could not say "no" to them. I would wind up binging on them - I could eat 4 to 6 donuts with no problem at all.

I began a weight loss program. I was following my plan to the tee. Then on Saturday morning, my husband brought home some donuts. "Here honey, I thought you'd enjoy these." I devoured every last crumb.

My husbands intention was not to make me go off plan. He wasn't even thinking that I was trying to lose weight. He simply wanted to do something nice for me.

Your loved ones could be hindering you by tempting you with seconds, cooking your favorite foods, or buying your favorite ice cream.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Identify your loved ones behavior that is sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
  2. Identify your loved ones reasons for that behavior.
    • Are they trying to do something nice for you?
    • Do they feel appreciated when you eat their cooking?
    • Are they bringing in the ice cream for themselves, not realizing that is making you lose track of your goals?

If you are a little apprehensive about approaching your loved one, ask yourself why. It's probably one of two reasons:

  1. You like having someone to blame for your failures. It's easy to say, "I keep blowing it because my wife is such a good cook and demands I eat seconds." Or "My husband is so nice to me he keeps buying me donuts, if I tell him to stop, he may never buy me anything again." If this is you, you need to decide how important reaching your goal really is. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others.
  2. You don't know how to approach them or you don't want to hurt their feelings. If this is the case then you need to practice ... in front of the mirror, to a friend, or even to the dog. Picture yourself telling your loved one exactly what you need from him/her to help you achieve your goals.

Remember, more than anything else, your loved ones want YOU to be HAPPY and HEALTHY, and will do anything in their power to help you achieve your goals.

Sleep deprivation may prevent weight loss or make weight loss more difficult. In a 2004 study researchers at the University of Chicago found that "partial sleep deprivation alters the circulating levels of the hormones that regulate hunger, causing an increase in appetite and a preference for calorie-dense, high-carbohydrate foods."

Many people definitely eat too many carbohydrates because of increased appetite. Steps to Lose Weight Over Christmas

Losing weight over Christmas can be easier than you thought. Between the holiday parties and tons of eating constantly you may think it would be hard to achieve success in your weight loss goals but you have to remain committed. Never tell yourself that you "don't have time to work out". You always have time because you have to make your time. When at your Christmas events you must: make smart alcohol choices, have good portion control and absolutely must exercise in between your holiday parties.

No alcohol is good unless it is a glass of wine a day. There are, however, smarter choices to drink at your Christmas parties. One good example of a certain alcoholic beverage being better than another is wine or any kind of spritzers. These still have calories but not as much as beer or a cocktail with a lot of calories. It is better to have water with a lime or lemon instead but if you must have a drink a glass of wine it is fine as long as you do not overdo it.

A huge issue that is usually the hardest to deal with during Christmas is portion control. When snacking before the big meal why not try grabbing a handful of nuts or chips instead of snacking nonstop before you even get to the meal. Most of the time people get full off the snacks in front of them and lose their appetite for the meal, when the meal is healthier than all of that snacking. Make sure you always take a plate full and no more. One pastry or roll is okay but no more than that, keep in mind everything is okay in moderation.

Make sure you know that just because it is the holidays does not mean you should not be working out, it means you should be working out much harder. Working out should be more than just going to the gym. A few options are: going on a walk after dinner, going shopping (all that walking does wonders on your body and we all need to shop for Christmas this time of year) and lastly park a half a mile away from the mall, that little bit each time you go can help significantly this time of year.

You need to focus on those little extra things you do to exercise; a lot of little workouts are just as good as one big workout. Like I stated before it just takes making smart alcohol choices, portion control and a lot of exercise between all your holiday parties and events. Remember, it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change. You are the only person that can change yourself, no one else can do it, so you must have the self motivation it takes to lose weight over the holidays.
