Fiber, as it relates to food, is something we've heard a lot about in recent years. But what, exactly, is fiber? First, fiber is classified under the carbohydrate food group; however, unlike most foods, fiber does not contain any vitamins or minerals. Furthermore, fiber is low in calories and is an important ingredient in a weight loss program.

Fiber is further classified into two types, water-soluble and water-insoluble. As you would expect, water-soluble fiber dissolves in water whereas insoluble fiber does not. They are commonly known as soluble and insoluble fiber. The benefits of soluble fiber are the reduction of cholesterol in the blood and its ability to slow down carbohydrate digestion. It also regulates the release of glucose in the blood, which stabilizes the blood sugar level. Good sources of soluble fiber include oatmeal, oat bran, citrus fruits, beans, dried peas, apples, beans, and potatoes.

Insoluble fiber not only does not dissolve in water but it actually absorbs water. This creates bulk in the intestinal track, which eases the passing of food and softens the stools. Insoluble fiber is also an important factor in keeping the colon healthy. You'll find insoluble fiber in vegetables and fruits such as pears, carrots, asparagus, broccoli, and whole grain bread and cereals like whole wheat and wheat bran.

Both insoluble and soluble fibers pass through the stomach to the small intestine without being affected by the digestion process. When they arrive at the colon or the large intestine, they may be in a state of partial or complete fermentation due to the colon bacteria. Although gas is an unwelcome product of fermentation the positive result is the formation of short-chain fatty acids, which is one of the most important health benefits of insoluble fiber. These fatty acids control lipid and blood glucose levels, which contribute to a healthy colon and the proper regulation of the body's immune responses. Your weight loss efforts will be more productive if you consume high fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Since insoluble fiber increases the bulk in the intestines you will have a feeling of fullness for a longer time period and you'll find it takes fewer calories to satisfy your hunger.

The body needs a total of around 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day and this can be equally split between the soluable and insoluable fibers. You can normally get this amount of fiber in your diet by eating foods that are high in fiber. However, there are supplements available, which will make up for any deficiency if needed.

Soluable fibers and insoluable fibers are called dietary fibers, however, there is another type of fiber called functional fiber. This fiber is typically added to foods by manufacturers to increase the bulk without increasing the calories. Maltodextran, polydextrose, cellulose and insulin are classified as functional fibers.

Reasons to Lose Weight?

People have many reasons for losing weight. For me it is a health problem. I have had heart surgery twice and I don't want to have it again. Others have health issues such as obesity, overweight, thyroid problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, coronary heart disease, diabetes and various forms of cancer.

Many just want to look better. They want to get rid of cellulite, have a beach body, fit into clothing, lose stomach fat (that's me), lose that big butt, etc. They just hate the way they look. Nobody wants a double chin, man boobs or stomach rolls. And mothers dislikes stretch marks.

Being overweight can affect relationships. Divorce can come because of an overweight partner (which should NEVER happen). A spouse can continually make the partner that not-so-special other. Contention builds up and misery sinks in. Sex drive may go the way of the wind. Dating may be restricted to the Internet. There can be great sorrow here.

There can me short-term reasons for losing weight. You may want to be able to get into clothing, that bikini, those shorts. Maybe you are going to be in a wedding party. Maybe you are the bride or groom, a bridesmaid, a best man. Maybe you made a resolution to lose weight.

And pregnancy brings on weight which a new mother wants to lose. She may want to keep her weight down during pregnancy so she won't have to lose so much weight later.

Being overweight can effect our personal life. Maybe we get sick too often, our back hurts, our thighs get chaffed or perhaps we have to stay away from the sport we love. Clothing becomes a more expensive issue as we need to go up a size or two. We may not be able to maintain hygiene like we use to and our feet waddle. And we are out of breath. Maybe obesity runs in your family which makes things even more challenging. It may keep you from obtaining employment (which is illegal), getting promoted or even be taken seriously. This can be a desperate state of affairs. You walk into a job interview and realize you are dead in the water.

What happens is that you lose your self confidence. You worry what others think. You are embarrassed in public. You may feel ugly. You have to stretch to get that seat belt around you in cars and planes. You hate walking up stairs in front of others and bathroom scales scare you to death.

The above are all good reasons to lose weight. Dieting can work. My wife has spent her life dieting, controlling what she eats and when she eats. She was very overweight after one of her pregnancies. She jogged, ruining her knees, was an instructor at Weight Watchers and got back into her wedding dress 20 years after our marriage. We have a picture to prove it.

There are medical procedures that are now helping those with very serious weight problems. I have talked to some of these people and they have been very happy about the outcome. But serious considerations must be given to any possible surgical outcomes. Some procedures are safer than other so you need discuss the possibilities with the doctor.

All of us must be kind to each other. Just doing that can remove the stress that is causing another to be overweight in the first place. "Henry yelled at me again! Where is that box of chocolates?"

The weight loss did not change drastically the first few weeks, but the inches were falling off. I could see the results quick. In just a few weeks my pants were looser. I had lost a total of 3 inches. After a 2 month period I was down from a size 12 to an 8. The great thing about this system is all I did was workout. I did not change my eating habits. Most popular diets, especially the ones that claim to work for fast weight loss, depend on reduced calories to cause the fat to burn off. Many researchers have found that the fat almost never stays off when these 'well-balanced' low-calorie diets are used.

However, there is an 'unbalanced' diet that has been shown to work for fast and permanent weight loss, without making people hungry.

Ever since 1825, when Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote a famous book about food called The Physiology of Taste, the most successful therapeutic diets for obesity have been based on the idea that excess body fat was caused by eating too many starchy and floury foods.

Our great-grandmothers would have agreed, because this was considered common sense until about 40 years ago. Diets that work for permanent weight loss restrict the refined carbohydrates, like sugar and flour, without restricting the number of calories consumed as protein or fat.

In 1882 a doctor named William Harvey, who had recently attended a lecture by a famous Paris expert in diabetes, became famous himself by curing a patient of his obesity. His patient, William Banting, wrote a wildly popular pamphlet describing his successful weight loss using the prescribed diet of meat, fish, and game, with a bit of toast and fruit.

Dr. Harvey knew that grain fed to animals makes them fat, that diabetic patients are often overweight, and that a diet based on meat and dairy products would stop the secretion of sugar in the urine of diabetic patients and caused their excess weight to melt away.

Dr. Harvey theorized that excess weight and diabetes may be different manifestations of the same syndrome, and he put his new patient on a diet made up of meat, dairy products and low-starch vegetables. As it turns out, this theory turned out to be correct.

The syndrome has been variously called Syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, and most recently metabolic syndrome. Peter Cleave was one of the first to publish studies and theories that connected the 'modern' illnesses of diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, gout and hypertension to one disorder caused by the metabolism of refined carbohydrates.

Fattening Experiment Proves Where Body Fat Comes From

In the 1960s Ethan Sims, a researcher, began a series of 'fattening' experiments. Volunteers were asked to eat an excess number of calories, up to 1000 calories over the amount they would normally eat, in order to find out which foods made them fat.

Volunteers who were given only protein foods, or only fatty foods, lost their appetites and were unable to eat enough to increase the calories as much as the researchers wanted, and they were unable to gain weight.

When volunteers were put on diets that included both carbohydrates and fats, they sometimes ate more than 6000 extra calories in a day and still felt hungry. These volunteers had no trouble at all gaining weight. This research showed that there is something about the carbohydrates themselves that allows people to overeat and still remain hungry.

Over the years a number of obesity specialists have prescribed a low-carb diet to their patients, and these diets have met with considerable success, often without reducing the calories. One of the first doctors to write about his success with a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet was Blake Donaldson, author of Strong Medicine,, in which he gave a number of case studies of people losing as much as three pounds a week. Two other doctors who wrote about using similar diets with their patients were Dr. John Yudkin, author of The Slimming Business, and Dr. Atkin's Diet Revolution, written in 1973.

In a recent book by Gary Taubes, Good Calories, Bad Calories, the history of obesity, diabetes and heart disease research and treatment is thoroughly explained. After spending over 5 years reading the historical and current literature about the treatment of illnesses associated with the metabolic syndrome, Mr. Taubes concluded that the documentation points to a therapeutic diet based on animal foods and fresh vegetables. 1. Run up some stairs

Look, typical running/jogging on a flat surface sucks because it's steady-state cardio. You need to push yourself with running in short bursts of high intensity and then back off a bit and go at it with a lower intensity. You can do that with stair runs. If you have stairs in your home, do the following.

Run up them and then walk back down. Keep repeating this for a total of 5-15 minutes... depending on what kind of condition you're in. The running up the stairs is the high intensity while the walking down the stairs is the low intensity (active rest). There is no in-between... like jogging. Do this 3-5 days a week.

2. Do sprinting and walking intervals

This is simple. Outside on your sidewalk you can run hard for 10 seconds or so. Once you've done that, walk for the next 45 seconds. Keep repeating these high and low intensity efforts for 10 minutes. If you did these 2-3 times a week (less than 30 minutes a week total), you'll get some incredible fat burning. Need to Lose Weight? Find a Burn the Fat Diet

When people think of weight loss, too often they're concerned with how much they actually weigh. However, the number on the scale is only part of the picture. You really need to choose a burn the fat diet plan. Ultimately, its how you look that's important, not the number on the scale.

For instance, most people will see a dramatic loss of weight the first week or two of a diet. However, what they don't realize is that much of what they're losing is water weight. That's why the weight loss seems to slow after the first couple of weeks. Your goal is to burn fat, not drop water weight and toss the diet.

Here are a few pointers that will help you burn fat fast:

Add light weights to your workout. As you build muscle, you'll naturally lose weight fast. There's no reason to overdo it. Add a few light weights to your exercise plan and you'll burn fat faster.

Don't wreck your metabolism with crash diets. Crash diets will wreck your metabolism and get in the way of your fat-loss efforts. Any time you deprive your body of essential nutrients, you'll lose muscle not fat.

Don't cut out all the fat. It's true. Eat healthy monounsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats and cut out the saturated fats. Cutting out all the fat will result in unsightly dry skin.

Get more sleep. Now you have a good reason to get to bed early! Studies have shown that people who forego sleep are heavier and at risk for developing diabetes. If you're getting less than eight hours, go to bed earlier to enhance your weight loss.

Drink more water. Water will not burn the fat, but it will hydrate you and make weight loss more effective. You'll also get full much faster. Replace sugary drinks with water, and watch the fat melt away.

Eat more fiber. Fiber is an essential part of any healthy eating plan. If you want to lose weight, eat more fiber. You'll feel fuller, and it will make you healthier by flushing out the bad LDL cholesterol. Making simple changes like eating an orange instead of drinking orange juice will increase fiber intake.

Forget the fast food. Fast food is loaded with fat, so steer clear of it. If you must eat on the run, choose healthy salads and stay light on the dressing. You want to burn your own fat stores, so eliminate the fast food fat now.

Eat more slowly. It takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you're full. That's why you feel so uncomfortable after you've eaten quickly. The faster you eat, the more likely you'll overindulge. Take the time to taste your meal, and you'll be rewarded with more fat loss.

Weight Loss - Using Aerobic Exercises to Lose Weight

Everyday, it seems, we hear of some new truths, which may contradict what we have always accepted about a certain element of health and fitness. This can be related to the amount of minerals or vitamins you should or should not consume, the amount of exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, you should have and so on.

What is Aerobic Exercise?

Some popular examples of aerobic exercise include walking, cycling, aerobic dancing and swimming. The exercises should include leg muscles, hips, and arm muscles along with large volumes of inhalation and exhalation.

Advantages of Aerobic Exercise

There is a whole range of benefits that come from doing aerobic exercises including better blood circulation and respiration. Other benefits are enhanced muscle shape and tone plus a feeling of good overall health. But the most significant benefit of aerobic exercise is its effect on weight loss.

A Common Truth Disproved

Until recently is was generally assumed that if you exercised with medium intensity for prolonged periods of time this would be the most effective means to burn off fat. However, several studies and findings from fitness experts have shown that continuous hours of aerobic exercise such as jogging is not as successful in burning off fat as it was once thought to be. Many people report that even after long periods of jogging they still had excessive fat on their bodies.

Best Fat Burning Method

Instead of these long periods of exercise it was found that high-intensity exercise for shorter periods was not only less time consuming but also it proved more effective for fat loss. The reasoning is that the metabolism is kept at a higher level for a longer period of time, which resulted in more calories burned. Some examples of these high-intensity exercises are weight training and aerobic intervals exercise.

Another great exercise is spinning on a stationary bike. This should be done for a period of not less than 20 minutes along with sprints of 30 to 60 seconds duration. This is an easy routine to do and won't impact your joints like jogging on a hard surface. If you enjoy running and you aren't bothered with joint pain you're better off on a surface such as grass, dirt, or a running track. Try to avoid running on hard surfaces as much as possible to prevent developing joint and spinal injuries.

Aerobic Exercise and Your Heart

In addition to weight loss your cardiovascular system stands to benefit tremendously from your aerobic exercises. Your heart, of course, is a muscle and is capable of working for many decades. Your heart does not have to be trained like other muscles in your body unless you participate in endurance events. It may be necessary to train the heart to withstand severe emotional and physical stress. High intensity exercises will help your heart to endure many challenging situations.

Summary: This study compared three diets: 1) Atkins (low carb), 2) Mediterranean, and 3) low fat. Main results after 2 years were:

Atkins diet: average weight loss, 12.1 pounds; with greatest reduction in ratio of total cholesterol to HDL

Mediterranean diet: average weight loss, 10.1 pounds; with most favorable changes in fasting glucose and insulin levels among diabetics

Low fat diet: average weight loss, 7.3 pounds; with smallest reduction in ratio of total cholesterol to HDL

Conclusions: Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets may be effective alternatives to low-fat diets. The more favorable effects on lipids (with the low-carbohydrate diet) and on glycemic control (with the Mediterranean diet) suggest that personal preferences and metabolic considerations might inform individualized tailoring of dietary interventions.

Comment: This is the most recent research to vindicate the diet made famous by Dr. Robert Atkins more than 30 years ago. The bottom line is that carbohydrates, meaning refined sugars and flour, are the main dietary culprit behind getting fat and unhealthy. Although the results may seem mild and the conclusions timid, this is another study that confirms what scientists have known about dietary carbohydrates since before the turn of the 20th century.

Benefits of High-Protein Weight Loss Diets

Bodyweight Cardio Weight Loss Circuits

I always have clients that ask me for "Desert Island Workouts", meaning if they were trapped on a deserted island with absolutely no equipment (as they often are in their hotel rooms or when at home), what could they possibly do to burn fat and maintain muscle mass.

The solution is simple. With a little creativity, you can do dozens of bodyweight exercises to burn fat fast. Let's use one of my patented Bodyweight Cardio Circuits as an example.

When putting together a bodyweight circuit, I like to go in this order:

1) A fast, dynamic bodyweight exercise (jumping jacks or running in place)

2) A bodyweight squat (put your hands behind your head to work your upper back)

3) An easy pushup (regular or close grip, kneeling if you are a beginner)

4) A single-leg exercise (such as a walking lunge)

5) An upper back exercise (pullups, chinups, or inverted rows if you are lucky enough to have something to hang on, otherwise you can use resistance band rows or dumbbell rows - unfortunately, if you are truly stuck on a deserted island, you don't have much you can do here)

6) Another single-leg exercise such as split squats

7) A total body ab exercise (mountain climbers are great)

8] Finish with a total body, fast paced exercise (burpees, jump rope, jumping jacks, sprints, running in place, etc)

Do this as 1 giant circuit. No rest between exercises. Rest 1 minute at the end of the circuit and go through this 1-3 more times depending on your fitness level.

BEGINNERS should only go through this once, and at an easy pace AND with REST between exercises. Be CONSERVATIVE anytime you start a new program. If you are advanced, you can start with 2-3 circuits per workout.

So have a great time with these fun bodyweight cardio workouts...

You're probably falling into 1 of many weight loss traps. This is totally destroying any chance you have at successfully losing weight. Look, I'm going to briefly outline a couple simple traps and the solutions to them in this 2 minutes long article. So read this NOW.

Weight Loss Traps

1. Not drinking enough water

Look, I know you don't want to hear this, but there's a reason why you need to drink water. If you don't drink enough, your body will force itself to retain extra water... at least 3-8 pounds of extra water. This has to do with survival and thousands of years ago. If you want to drop water weight fast and lose some pounds within 2 days, drink extra water to the point that your urine is light yellow or clear.

2. Not eating enough food

You can starve yourself and lose weight, but you'll regain the weight. So there's no point to starving yourself. If you starve yourself, your body slows down your metabolism to conserve energy. So it's basically doing everything it can to retain the fat you already have on your body. You're basically fighting yourself when you don't eat enough.

3. Eat 2-3 big meals a day

WRONG! Your body needs small meals for fuel. For many reasons. First, smaller meals more often speed up your metabolism due to the digestive process. There's fat burning going on when you're digesting food. You can eat the same amount of food, just spread it out among more meals. This causes way more fat burning.
