Losing Weight Your Style

Often times, we're told to do what we aren't totally comfortable with. Especially when it comes to losing weight. Eat like this, exercise like that. Find out how you can do it your style, your way.

Hobbies

You'll have to find a particular physical activity you like as a hobby. The reason for this is simple. If you don't like what you're doing, you're not going to keep it up and you'll most likely fail in your goal to lose weight. If you don't have one, go try out a few activities and find that physical activity you like.

Make sure you perform this activity at least 3 times a week. Try to keep your workout no more than an hour and no less than half an hour.

Drink lots of water

Before every single meal, drink one to two glasses of water. The amount really depends on how much you think overeating, if you think two isn't enough than just drink more. It's pretty hard to drink too much water anyways since your body will simply get rid of excess water.

This in itself will fill your stomach up. Put it this way, if you're overeating, you're definitely getting more than enough food so don't worry that you won't be getting enough nutrients unless all you're eating is junk food, but we'll leave that topic for another day.

End of the day you'll end up eating less. When I talk about a glass of water, I mean plain water, not fruit juice, not a soda drink, just plain water. If you absolutely can't stomach plain water, try adding Stevia to your plain water to give it some sweetness. Stevia is a natural sweetener that will not make you put on weight & you should be able to get it in most pharmacies.

By adding these tips to your lifestyle, you'll start losing weight; however like all things it will take time. Give yourself a month at the very least. You're already losing the weight in your very own style since you're picking out the physical activity that you like and also just adding more water to your diet. Perseverance is the key here. If you absolutely can't stick to just activity, than just mix it up as it's even better at keeping you from feeling bored. Have fun.

Bodyweight Cardio Weight Loss Circuits

I always have clients that ask me for "Desert Island Workouts", meaning if they were trapped on a deserted island with absolutely no equipment (as they often are in their hotel rooms or when at home), what could they possibly do to burn fat and maintain muscle mass.

The solution is simple. With a little creativity, you can do dozens of bodyweight exercises to burn fat fast. Let's use one of my patented Bodyweight Cardio Circuits as an example.

When putting together a bodyweight circuit, I like to go in this order:

1) A fast, dynamic bodyweight exercise (jumping jacks or running in place)

2) A bodyweight squat (put your hands behind your head to work your upper back)

3) An easy pushup (regular or close grip, kneeling if you are a beginner)

4) A single-leg exercise (such as a walking lunge)

5) An upper back exercise (pullups, chinups, or inverted rows if you are lucky enough to have something to hang on, otherwise you can use resistance band rows or dumbbell rows - unfortunately, if you are truly stuck on a deserted island, you don't have much you can do here)

6) Another single-leg exercise such as split squats

7) A total body ab exercise (mountain climbers are great)

8] Finish with a total body, fast paced exercise (burpees, jump rope, jumping jacks, sprints, running in place, etc)

Do this as 1 giant circuit. No rest between exercises. Rest 1 minute at the end of the circuit and go through this 1-3 more times depending on your fitness level.

BEGINNERS should only go through this once, and at an easy pace AND with REST between exercises. Be CONSERVATIVE anytime you start a new program. If you are advanced, you can start with 2-3 circuits per workout.

Are Your Loved Ones Hindering Your Weight Loss Efforts?

Sometimes our loved ones can hinder our weight loss goals. Often times their intention is not to hinder us.

For example, I love donuts. There was a time in my life when I simply could not say "no" to them. I would wind up binging on them - I could eat 4 to 6 donuts with no problem at all.

I began a weight loss program. I was following my plan to the tee. Then on Saturday morning, my husband brought home some donuts. "Here honey, I thought you'd enjoy these." I devoured every last crumb.

My husbands intention was not to make me go off plan. He wasn't even thinking that I was trying to lose weight. He simply wanted to do something nice for me.

Your loved ones could be hindering you by tempting you with seconds, cooking your favorite foods, or buying your favorite ice cream.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Identify your loved ones behavior that is sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
  2. Identify your loved ones reasons for that behavior.
    • Are they trying to do something nice for you?
    • Do they feel appreciated when you eat their cooking?
    • Are they bringing in the ice cream for themselves, not realizing that is making you lose track of your goals?

  3. Tell your loved one what you need from him/her.

If you are a little apprehensive about approaching your loved one, ask yourself why. It's probably one of two reasons:

  1. You like having someone to blame for your failures. It's easy to say, "I keep blowing it because my wife is such a good cook and demands I eat seconds." Or "My husband is so nice to me he keeps buying me donuts, if I tell him to stop, he may never buy me anything again." If this is you, you need to decide how important reaching your goal really is. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others.
  2. You don't know how to approach them or you don't want to hurt their feelings. If this is the case then you need to practice ... in front of the mirror, to a friend, or even to the dog. Picture yourself telling your loved one exactly what you need from him/her to help you achieve your goals.

Remember, more than anything else, your loved ones want YOU to be HAPPY and HEALTHY, and will do anything in their power to help you achieve your goals.

Forget the fast food. Fast food is loaded with fat, so steer clear of it. If you must eat on the run, choose healthy salads and stay light on the dressing. You want to burn your own fat stores, so eliminate the fast food fat now.

Eat more slowly. It takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you're full. That's why you feel so uncomfortable after you've eaten quickly. The faster you eat, the more likely you'll overindulge. Take the time to taste your meal, and you'll be rewarded with more fat loss.

Sleep Deprivation May Prevent Weight Loss

Sleep deprivation may prevent weight loss or make weight loss more difficult. In a 2004 study researchers at the University of Chicago found that "partial sleep deprivation alters the circulating levels of the hormones that regulate hunger, causing an increase in appetite and a preference for calorie-dense, high-carbohydrate foods."

Many people definitely eat too many carbohydrates because of increased appetite. And this increased consumption of carbohydrates coupled with lacking sufficient hours of sleep each night can make a person crave even more carbohydrates. Not hitting the deep sleep cycle, or experiencing enough of the deep sleep cycle can trigger even more cravings for carbohydrates according to a highly respected neurologist. And this cycle can lead to an uncomfortable and unhealthy amount of weight gain because of excessive stress.

Sleep deprivation can often be caused by too much stress. And it is ironic that stress can cause less sleep, and less sleep can lessen a person's ability to deal with stress. Swimming Your Way to Weight Loss and Fitness

Picture yourself spending a nice relaxing day at the beach or by the pool working on your tan and taking a nice relaxing swim. What a nice way to spend the day. Swimming has always been regarded as an excellent form of recreation but can it really be a beneficial way to lose weight and get fit?

Now keep in mind that swimming will probably not help to strengthen bones because it is not a weight bearing exercise.

The main concern is that a lot of people will be out of breath long before they make it to the 30 minute mark and standing around by the side of the pool or just walking around effortlessly will not provide any benefit to you. The way to overcome this is to take a minute or two to rest when you need to, and gradually increase your swim times until 30 minutes of non-stop swimming is within your reach.

Everyone has different activities that they enjoy and those are just fine too but swimming is not only fun but also a great way to lose weight and get fit. It is easy to do and you don't need anything more than a swim suit and access to a pool, lake, or ocean to do it. So what are you waiting for?
