Losing Weight - Common Mistakes in Trying to Lose Pounds

With the problem of obesity assuming alarming proportions throughout the world, many people look for ways to lose their extra pounds. However, a sizeable proportion of such people make a number of common mistakes that spoil all their hard work. In some instances, these mistakes even end up increasing a person's weight instead of reducing it. We mention below some of the common mistakes people make while trying to lose pounds.

Many people fail to reckon with the lifestyle changes that are necessary for a weight loss program. They are often ill-prepared to face the new situation. So, it is necessary to understand certain stages of lifestyle change. One who is seeking to lose weight must be physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to tackle the new demands of a weight loss plan. Several weight loss plans have ups and downs. There may be times of relapse which one must be ready to face. So, lack of adequate preparation is one of the common mistakes people make while trying to lose weight.

Opting for a wrong course of action is another one of the common mistakes. Many people don't have a clear idea about what they really want. Do you want to shape up, or just lose weight, or both? Each of these means a different thing. Strength training can make you stronger but gives you some extra pounds as well. If you want to lose weight, pumping iron for hours is not the solution. Instead, physical activities including such as aerobics, walking, and even dancing can help.

Another common mistake is to have unrealistic expectations. Trying to lose, say 20 pounds in a week, is not just a wild dream but harmful as well. In most of these cases, people just abandon their weight loss plan midway when they fail to reach the unrealistic goal they set for themselves.

Many people make the mistake of adopting poor eating habits, such as skipping meals and going without food for long periods of time. They forget that if they don't eat, they overeat later. It is sensible to eat throughout the day and not to skip meals. It is also not practical to choose a weight loss diet that is completely different from what a person normally eats.

Among the common mistakes people make is to believe in dieting myths or fads. Bombarded by online advertisements and articles, many people succumb to the lure of such fad diets that promise quick and simple ways to lose pounds. Most of such diets are nothing but quick fixes that obviously end up in failure.

Other common mistakes a person makes while seeking to lose his/her extra pounds are comparing him/herself with others, following an unchanged routine forever, and allowing himself to spoil all the good work due to some bad habits. Any comparison is futile as each individual has his/her own characteristics that determine how he/she gains or loses weight. Not bringing variation in your routine may prove boring and reduce your motivation. So vary your routine to make it more interesting. And if you have a bad habit of visiting the pub after the gym, you just waste whatever you have achieved.
